Restoring your stone benchtop back to its natural beauty

Based in Melbourne, Mirror image marble works with all natural stones such as marble, granite, limestone, travertine and terrazzo and reconstituted stone surfaces. We find however that most of our customers are unaware that the different types of natural stone vary in porosity and need for sealing.

What are the advantages of protecting your natural stone benchtops?

By sealing your natural stone benchtops as soon as they are installed, you are avoiding any problems caused by acid etching and are ensuring the protection of your valuable asset.

We have different sealing solutions for different stone types.

For granite polish we use high quality impregnating sealers.

For most porous marbles we recommend Clearstone protective coatings. They both come in either a honed or polished finish and are backed by a 10 year written guarantee against acid etching.

Once the Clearstone is applied, your marble surfaces will be protected from etching caused by accidental spillages of acidic substances such as wine, vinegar, lemon juice, oil, soft drink etc.

All spillages can be easily wiped off with a wet cloth without leaving any damage to the stone bench.

How do natural stones differ?

There is a great deal of difference between natural stones. Most types of Granite for example only need protecting with a high quality impregnating sealer. Being a harder stone, they are not as susceptible to staining and an occasional application of a good quality impregnating sealer is all that is required to keep them in pristine condition.

However, Marble, Limestone and Travertine, although extremely beautiful, are by nature also extremely porous. These types of stone vary in their level of porosity and will stain in varying degrees with usage. In this instance, a simple impregnating sealer will not be sufficient to protect them from staining.

Examples of a couple of softer but highly sort after marbles are Calacutta and Carrara. These marbles have a very high level of porosity and can often etch even with water.

It can be quite disappointing to find out that your beautiful stone benchtop is quite fragile and if it has not been sealed correctly, it will quickly lose its original character.

Basically, anything that you use in your kitchen on a daily basis can damage your stone benches. Oil, vinegar, coffee, wine, beetroot, lemon juice and soft drinks can etch into the surface leaving unsightly stains and dull etch marks which detract from the original beauty of your stone.

This doesn’t have to be the case though if your kitchen benchtop, floor or bathroom stone is protected and maintained.
